Not long ago, performance marketing was mostly a targeting game. Advertisers competed on audience lists, interest combinations and clever segmentation. Creative was something the brand team handled.
Advertising platforms have since automated much of that targeting. Broad audiences, machine-learned delivery and automated campaign types now decide who sees an ad. That shift has moved the advantage somewhere else: to the creative itself.
Creative now does the targeting
When a platform has freedom to choose who sees an ad, it learns from who responds. The creative — its hook, imagery, language and offer — becomes the signal that tells the system who the ad is for.
A video about the ritual of preparing a drink will attract a different audience from a video about a discount, even with identical settings. In effect, the message selects the market.
Why creative affects cost
In auction-based media, ads that people engage with are generally rewarded with more efficient delivery. A creative that stops the scroll and earns a click does not just perform better at the same price — it often changes the price.
That means a strong creative improvement can reduce acquisition cost more than weeks of bid adjustments.
Building creative as a system
Treating creative as a performance variable means approaching it with the same discipline as bidding or tracking:
Start from customer psychology. What does the buyer fear, want, doubt or need to believe? Reviews, sales calls and support conversations are rich sources of real language.
Test angles, not just variations. Changing a button colour is a minor test. Changing the core argument — problem, outcome, proof, comparison, offer — is a meaningful one.
Design for the first two seconds. Most people decide almost immediately whether to keep watching or reading. The opening has to earn the rest.
Build a library. Sustained performance rarely comes from one winning ad. It comes from a library of proven concepts refreshed before fatigue sets in.
Measure at the right level. Look at hook rate, hold rate, click-through and cost per result for each concept — and connect them to downstream quality, not just clicks.
Brand and performance are not opposites
There is a false choice between "brand creative" and "performance creative". The best-performing ads are usually distinctive, consistent with the brand and clearly aimed at a specific person with a specific need.
Brand makes persuasion cheaper over time. Performance discipline makes sure each message earns its spend now.
In a world where machines choose the audience, the message is the strategy.
